On Tuesday, November 28th the Claremont City Council voted to repeal Ordinance No. 2000-08, opening the way for the Claremont University Center (CUC) to resubmit a development plan for the controversial Keck Graduate Institute. Prior to the council's unanimous vote to repeal the ordinance, students protested the imminent action by wearing gags and displaying signs in support of the Bernard Field Station (BFS). Students returning to campus this fall were surprised by changes in the long-distance calling service. Many old PIN numbers no longer worked, and several weeks passed before the first bills showed up in students' mailboxes. When the bills finally arrived, numerous complaints echoed throughout the mailroom. On Thursday evening, November 9, Mark Salzman, the first candidate for the new Roy Disney Creative Writing Chair spoke with students and faculty in Crookshank. Mr. Salzman talked about his life, experiences and ideas on the writing process, and also read from his work. His interaction with attendees as well as the excerpts he read were full of vitality and humor. Pomona's Battle of the Bands was held on Saturday, November 11th in the social room in the catacombs of Smith Campus Center. Featuring a bowl full of Skittles(tm), a bowl full of pickles, and approximately nine chairs, six bands in turn played their hearts out in a quest to rack up the most cans in their recycle bins.
